Healthy aging advocate and beloved broadcaster Judy Bailey talks to Jill Armitage about a couple she helped reconnect with their family though a Reverse Mortgage.

For one Christchurch couple in their mid-70s, time had started to feel more precious than ever.

Their son had been living in the United States for nearly a decade, building a life with his American wife and their three children – grandchildren the couple rarely got to see in person. While video calls helped bridge the distance, it wasn’t the same as being there.

“They felt that if they didn’t go now,” says Jill, a Reverse Mortgage Relationship Manager at Heartland Bank, “they might not ever get there while they still had their health and fitness.”

The desire was simple: travel overseas and spend meaningful time with their family. But financially, it wasn’t straightforward.

Like many retirees, their income was limited to New Zealand Superannuation. When they approached their bank about a personal loan, they were declined due to their age and income situation. It seemed like the trip might remain out of reach.

That’s when they began exploring another option: a reverse mortgage.

Jill worked closely with them throughout the process—explaining how interest accumulates, outlining expectations, and helping with the application and documentation. Just as importantly, she encouraged them to involve their family and seek independent legal advice, ensuring they felt confident and informed every step of the way.

With everything in place, the couple were able to access the funds they needed, and finally book their long-awaited trip.

When they returned, they made a special visit.

“They came in to see me with printed photos,” Jill recalls. “They wanted them all around the house, and they were absolutely beaming.”

The trip had given them something invaluable: time with their grandchildren, shared memories, and moments that simply can’t be replicated from afar.

“There were tears,” Jill says. “As a grandmother myself, I know how important those cuddles are. Not being able to have that, it’s heartbreaking.”

For this couple, the reverse mortgage was about seizing the opportunity to be present for the people who matter most, while they still could.

And when asked if they had any regrets?

“None whatsoever.”
